We hired a new guy at work a couple of years back (how time flies!) who started trying to give everyone a ‘high five‘. It was rather strange an uncomfortable — after all we’d never had deliberate physical contact with each other before — but the intention was pure so I joined in and high-fived him.

Time has passed and now high-fiving is the norm. It’s a great way of saying “well done” or “I agree”.

There’s also developed a guerrilla version where someone says “High Five!” and just as you’re about to make contact they yell something like “Telstra rules!” It’s too late. You’re committed. You find yourself ‘agreeing’ to the absurd statement.

I now think that there’s not enough high-fiving in the world. High-fives cheer you up and make you feel good.

Obviously Improv Everywhere felt the same so they headed down to the escalators at a New York subway station to hand out high-fives to everyone.

You can read and see more of their high-five campaign over at the improv everywhere blog.

I’m a big fan of Penny Arcade, a comic strip about gaming — even though I’m not into gaming that much. Gabe, the artist, is just fantastic.

They recently released a game that features the characters from their comic strip called “On the rain slick precipice of darkness” which I’ve never played, but when I read on their blog the other day about some competition with something to do with something called a Cubee, I was intrigued. So I clicked on the link, went down the rabbit hole and found myself in wonderland.

Turns out a Cubee is something you can print on your regular home-grade inkjet printer. You then cut it up with an Approxoknife (Well, they say an exactoknife, but I don’t have one that accurate). Then fold the right places and push it all together. No glue, no tape.

Their site has Cubees of Darth Vadar, Mario, Hellboy and Bender as well as Special Editions of Obama (and McCain if that’s how you swing — though the loser will be removed after the US election) and the cast of Precipice of Darkness.

I’ve spoken before about my Avatar. And I have m@d, L337 Illustrator skillz. So I decided to put them to good use. This is about 11pm last night. By 2am I had designed and tested my own Cubee. There were problems, so I circled them and went to bed. This morning I got up, fixed the problems and folded my Cubee. You can download the PDF here.

From the I-hate-subeditors department

I read a headline on the ABC today: “Study paves way for 500,000-song MP3 player“. It caught my eye: was this some amazing new technology that was only good for storing compressed music files?

No, they’re just dumbing-down a technology article so that ‘the masses’ understand it.

What’s worse is that the technology in question is being developed by IBM, whose design studio has designed some award winning mp3 players back in 2005, whose web shop sells a SanDisk mp3 player .. but whose manufacturing department and sales department have no such thing! In fact the photo in the article is of an Apple iPod!

OK, so how about the story itself? It’s actually a really interesting article on some IBM research into using some mind bending use of magnetic regions on nanowires. Well worth a read if you’re into technology – even if you don’t care about portable music players.

On a side note, the Also of Interest sidebar has taken the MP3 and Song keywords and decided that an article titled “MP breaks into Song” is related
